We’ve all woken up swollen at some point lookand for some, this is a daily problem. When it happens, our first thought is how to get rid of them quickly. While we believe there is no quick fix, TikTok seems to have a different view.

According to user Sheetal Deo’s video, her secret to a smooth under-eye area is… cream for hemorrhoids! Deo claims she uses hemorrhoid cream to reduce puffiness and fine lines under her eyes and that, at 32, she doesn’t have a single wrinkle.

But we wondered: Does under eye hemorrhoid cream really work and is it safe? To answer these questions, we did a survey and the experts are answering.

What causes puffiness under the eyes?

Swelling can be due to either a genetic predisposition or lifestyle factors. The swelling is linked to the lymph vessels around the eyes, which do not have valves and can fill with fluid, as dermatologist Dr. Patel. Causes include dehydration, sleeping face down, allergies, chronic rubbing, or using products that irritate the skin.

Can hemorrhoid cream help with bags?

The answer is yes, but it is not the best option. Hemorrhoid creams contain phenylephrine, which temporarily constricts blood vessels and reduces swelling. Also, many contain steroids to help reduce inflammation. However, using steroids around the eyes can lead to thinning and discoloration of the skin, which are irreversible problems.

What are the dangers of applying hemorrhoid cream near the eye area?

Hemorrhoid creams are not designed for use on the face or eyes, and applying them there can cause serious problems, including skin burns, corneal damage, and even glaucoma.

The best ways to deal with puffiness under the eyes

Instead of running out to buy hemorrhoid cream, there are safer solutions. Proper hydration is key so you need to drink enough water, get enough sleep (at least 8 hours every night), use cold compresses and take allergy medicine if necessary. Caffeinated products may offer temporary effects by reducing swelling.
