Australian actress Cate Blanchett, 55, praised the work of Brazilian writer Clarice Lispector (1920-1977) during her awards speech at the San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain, when she received a trophy for her lifetime achievement.

Cate said she has been reading books by Clarice lately and praised her. “We live in uncertain times and I seek courage in Clarice Lispector, the absolutely brilliant Brazilian author, whose work I have been reading recently. And she says: ‘There are certain advantages in not knowing. Like a virgin territory, the mind is free from mistakes. Everything I do not know constitutes the greater part of me: this is my gift,'” she began.

“I live in hope. The journey continues. There are only islands of certainty. So thank you very much for this little island of certainty tonight,” the Australian added.

In a press conference after receiving the honor, Cate once again cited Clarice as an example.

“I’ve been reading Clarice Lispector, the incredible Brazilian writer. And she says, ‘It takes a lot of effort to be simple.’ Usually, things that seem effortless require a lot of preparation,” he commented.
