The band had given a first taste of the songs that make up their new album during their ‘Shows Of A Lost World’ tour, kicking off their shows with ‘Alone’.

“It’s the track that unlocked the record. From the moment we recorded this piece of music I knew it was the opening track and I felt like the whole album was coming through clearly,” said the band’s frontman Robert Smith in a statement.

“I’ve been trying hard for some time to find the right verse to start the right opening track with, working on the simple idea of ’I’m lonely’, always with this nagging feeling in the back of my mind that I already knew who should is the opening verse.’

Smith added that he remembered Ernest Dawson’s poem Dregs after he finished recording “and that was the moment I knew the song and the album were real”.

“Alone” begins with an instrumental intro lasting over three minutes, before Smith begins to sing.

British music publication NME called the song “epic and full of emotion”, while the British newspaper Guardian described it as “magnificently wrapped in melancholy and despair”, rating it 4 out of 5 stars.
