British writer JK Rowling, 56, author of the famous Harry Potter book saga, has appealed for donations to help children stranded in Ukrainian orphanages and promised to match donations of up to £1 million. .

The writer retweeted a request from the Lumos Foundation, which she co-founded in 2005 and which currently raises funds to deliver food, hygiene and medical supplies to those affected by the Ukrainian humanitarian crisis.

“I will personally match donations to this appeal, up to £1 million,” promised JK Rowling, who thanked people who have already donated to the foundation.

Lumos explains on its website that it works in the Zhytomyr region — west of the capital Kiev — an area where, before the Russian invasion, more than 1,500 children lived in orphanages. Nearly 100,000 children live in institutions across Ukraine, the foundation says.

“The invasion of Russian forces means that there are now more children in danger,” warned Lumos, who said he wanted to help minors displaced and traumatized by the conflict.

Several other celebrities also announced aid to Ukraine and started fan campaigns. This is the case of Ashton Kutcher, 44, and Mila Kunis, 38, who raised more than US$ 6.8 million (R$ 34.4 million) until last Saturday (5), in addition to promising to donate up to US$ 3 million. (more than R$15 million), with the ultimate goal of raising US$30 million (R$150 million).

Actors Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds announced on their social media profiles that, in an attempt to motivate followers to help Ukrainians, they would combine donations of up to $1 million. .

When you donate, we’ll match up to $1 million, creating double the support,” wrote the Deadpool protagonist. That way, with every amount donated, the actors guarantee that they will combine and duplicate what was contributed. So if someone donating $1, they will also donate $1.
