Where is the #MeToo movement, really? Combs is ‘done’…
The pattern of abuse repeats itself over and over again. Dating, drinking, drugs, passing out, rape. Then, abandonment, oblivion, shame… There are already more than 130 people, mostly women, who have filed a lawsuit against the once almighty Sean “Diddy” Combs: rapper, music producer, entrepreneur and artistic mentor to personalities such as Usher and Justin Bieber.
Recall that in mid-September, the rapper was arrested and charged with sexual abuse, extortion and trafficking. These charges, if proven, Sean Combs he will stay in prison for the rest of his life. In October, more than 120 complaints came to the authorities, with 25 of them involving minor children, only nine years old!
In the US, the case of 54-year-old Combs, also known as Puff Daddy or Diddy, has gone from shock to outrage. Movie producer Harvey Weinstein, who is serving 16 years in prison, has been accused by about 80 women, and counting. Combs already has 131 complaints against him, but the Texas attorneys who filed those last 120 said on Oct. 1 that in just 10 days they had received as many as 3,285 calls from people claiming to be his victims. If the Harvey Weinstein case generated enough discussion on social networks to mobilize the movement #MeTooCombs’ case may take it to a new level.
Celebrity impunity is at the heart of repeated abuse. Victims describe Combs as a predator: he promised them a bright career, generally in the music industry, but he also had influence in other areas, including fashion, events and public relations. Then came the abuse. He would violently abuse them and then wait for them to remain silent. But it wasn’t just his power and fame that kept them quiet. There was also a large network of associates, friends and co-workers who knew about the abuse and not only didn’t disclose it, but kept it – and keep it – hidden for decades.
In the report – 14 pages please! – that lists the charges against Combs, there is a lot of reference to the infamous “freak-offs”. These are parties or orgies that lasted for days, which most people thought started in 2008, but they were wrong. They had been around since the early 1990s. During these “freak-offs,” Combs drugged and raped women and even videotaped them. They themselves were exhausted or drunk to escape and then kept quiet for understandable reasons.
Social media and many international media outlets have launched their own investigation to see if they can find out which other powerful figures in the entertainment industry are involved. No one has talked about Combs. His four children with model Kim Porter, who died in 2018 of pneumonia, defended him. As they stated in their statement: “We have seen so many hurtful and false rumors circulating about our parents Kim Porter and Sean Combs’ relationship, as well as our mother’s tragic death, that we feel the need to speak out.”
Like any industry powerhouse, Combs had countless friends with whom he posed at dozens of parties. From pictures that have been released, we see him drinking champagne with Leonardo DiCaprio, Mariah Carey, Lil Kim, Tommy Lee, Jonah Hill, Mel B, the Olsen sisters, Donna Karan, his then-girlfriend , Jennifer Lopez – they dated between 1999 and 2001 – and his former close friend, Ashton Kutcher, and his then partner, Demi Moore.
In fact, at a party for his 50th birthday, held in December 2019, he was photographed with several Kardashian sisters, Naomi Campbell, Beyoncé and Jay Z, Fergie, Pharrell Williams and Vanessa and Kobe Bryant – who would die six weeks later in a helicopter crash. But the parties that the media had access to are very different from the… “horror parties” that he used to throw.
Combs is “finished” and it is certain that his famous friends – who are now silent – will be the first to “crucify” him. We will see a lot happening and being revealed in the near future. His public image will be ruined forever no matter what happens during the trial. As for his fortune, 1 billion dollars is not a little…
