An intact tomb containing at least 12 human skeletons and exceptionally well-preserved burial gifts made of copper, iron and ceramics has been identified by researchers
The enchanting ancient city of Petra in Jordan still reveals its treasures today. In a new Indiana Jones-esque archaeological discovery, researchers have located beneath the “Treasury” – the famous Al-Khazneh monument – an intact tomb, containing at least 12 human skeletons and extremely well-preserved burial gifts made of copper, iron and ceramics.
The new find is estimated to be around 2,000 years old and it is impressive that the tomb was full and untouched as most tombs discovered in Petra are empty.
The team of archaeologists led by Pearce Paul Creasman, executive director of the American Research Center, excavated the tomb in August, filming the work and the images are going around the world.
“The intact tomb and its findings provide a rare insight into the life of the Nabateans, ancient Arab nomads who lived in the desert during the fourth century BC. to AD 106,” Professor Chrisman enthused.
“People think they know Petra. They recognize the Treasury but there are many more under our feet,” he said characteristically.
The Vault attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists each year and has been used as a film set most notably as the location of the Holy Grail in the 1989 film Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
