Understand the surgery to reduce the forehead performed by former BBB Thais Braz

by

Pediatric dentist Thaís Braz, 29, who participated in Big Brother Brasil 21, surprised everyone by revealing this Thursday (10) that she had a surgery to reduce the size of her forehead, called frontoplasty. She, who wore bangs to disguise the size of her forehead, said it was something that had bothered her since she was a child.

Plastic surgeon Victor Cutait, a member of the SBCP (Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery), says the technique is old and used in face reconstruction in cases of burns and in people scalped in boat accidents that happen in the Amazon.

”It is very common in the north of Brazil that there is a lot of female scalping of women who have part of the scalp ripped off by the boat’s engine. It is a technique that comes for reconstruction”, he explains.

The surgery, lasting an average of one hour, can reduce up to five centimeters of the forehead. According to Cutait, the technique consists of making an incision close to the hair root along the forehead area to the temples, allowing the scalp to detach.

With this, Cutait says, the surgeon is able to turn the skin of the scalp like a “helmet visor” and advance it forwards or backwards allowing to reduce the size of the forehead. “The person will exchange the larger forehead for a scar near the root of the hair”, says the doctor, who usually uses a “V” cutting technique, which allows the hair to grow and hide the scar.

He explains that the size of the forehead reduction will depend on the patient’s needs and the symmetry of the face. In the case of Thais, she reduced two centimeters and achieved a symmetry that the doctor says is perfect. “In facial harmonization you use the basic rule of trying to match [as partes do rosto].”

Post-surgery requires the patient not to lift weight, avoid physical exercises, sun, beach and pool for 30 days. He should also wear a forehead band – like the one Thais shows in the video – for seven to 15 days, according to medical advice.

According to Cuitat, the band has the function of tightening the area of the cut and preventing swelling due to the detachment of the scalp and accumulation of liquids. Some patients may still have bruises on the face and eye area, which disappear over time.

The patient will also have to undergo a medical follow-up for two years so that the scar does not enlarge or become high. “You should wear sunscreen and avoid traction [do couro cabeludo] from three to six months. Avoid hairstyles that pull the hair and cause the scar to widen.”

To reduce the size of the forehead, the patient must pay an average of R$ 10 to R$ 30 thousand, depending on the case. Cutait also recommends that patients always look for surgeons who are members of the SBCP.
