“I think at some point you stop blaming yourself,” the “Wicked” actress said.
Michelle Yeoh stated that she felt like a “failure” because she was unable to have children. The ‘Wicked’ actress shared her perspective during a discussion about infertility.
“I think the worst time you go through is every month you feel like a failure”she said during an appearance on the show BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour. “It wasn’t for lack of trying, because I always loved, and still love, babies.”
The “Everything Everywhere All at Once” star explained: “I think it’s a woman’s choice. It is your choice if you want to have children and it should not be forced upon you. However, I always wanted to have children.”
Yeoh stated that her experience of infertility affected her first marriage to Sir Dickson Poon. The couple married in 1988 and divorced in 1992.
“When I got married the first time, that was very clear in our path, that this was a marriage for having children, the next generation and all that.”she said, and went on to say that the eventual dissolution of the relationship was “heartbreaking” but necessary.
“You also have to understand, these are conversations you really have to have with yourself and be able to look forward and think: Yes, we love each other very much now, but in 10 or 20 years, I still can’t give him the family he craves,” Yeoh said. “And you have to be fair sometimes, which is why these dialogues between a couple are so important. If one wants something and the other doesn’t, that’s something you have to deal with from the start, because there’s going to be a lot of pain down the road. So I think it was very brave on our part to admit that, to say, “Okay, let’s not pull it.”
Poon is a father of five – Yeoh is godmother to the eldest. Last year she married Jean Todt and recently became a grandmother to her stepson’s child.
“I am 62 years old. Of course I’m not going to have a child now, but the thing is, we just had a grandchild,” she continued. “Then you feel like you’re still very, very blessed to have a baby in your life.”. And he added: “I think at some point you stop blaming yourself.”
