For the first time, more than 80 objects from the Antikythera Shipwreck are on display at the Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation, in the most complete periodical exhibition to date that presents the results of modern research, from 2012 to the recent 2024, and gives information about the ship, the dependence , the cargo and the passengers.

According to a related announcement, after six years, the Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation is once again hosting findings from the wreck of Antikythera, once again offering the public the opportunity to get to know and tour the great findings of the amazing wreck of Antikythera with its famous Mechanism .

Bronze rings used to manage the sails, lead rings that released the five anchors the ship carried, and pieces of the ship’s hull are among the artifacts that provide information about the ship’s condition, information presented for the first time. , after 12 years of excavations. Also included in the exhibition are spears, amphorae, lignins, metal objects, glassware, jewelry and a rich collection of ceramics that reveal the cargo of the ship as well as the route it followed, with stops at all the great ports of the time, such as Kos, of Rhodes et al.

Among the findings, oversized sections of marble and bronze statues hold a special place. What stands out is the marble head of Hercules crowned with a vine, which seems to belong to the Farnese-style marble headless statue of Hercules of the National Archaeological Museum that was lifted in 1901 by the Simian moppers, as the institution’s announcement informs. Parts of human bones are also displayed in the exhibition, giving information about the castaways, while objects such as parts of a shaft, pessos and olive kernels bear witness to the way of life during the voyage.

The exhibition “The Shipwreck of Antikythera: 124 years of underwater archaeological research” is divided into sections on the ground floor of the Historical Library of the Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation, where parts of the ship and its equipment are displayed in the first room. In the vestibule of the main hall, the exhibits relating to the shipwrecks and life on board are presented, while the main hall is occupied by the items from the ship’s cargo.

The exhibition was inaugurated on November 18, in the presence of the Minister of Culture Linas Mendonis, at a special event. The exhibition is supported by the Ministry of Culture and the Ephorate of Marine Antiquities and is curated by Dr. Archaeologist Angeliki G. Simosi. The exhibition is accompanied by a full color illustrated catalog and during its duration organized guided tours will be planned.
