The tomb dates back to 1400 BC and in later times was used as a “Sanctuary of the Ancestors”
The Ministry of Culture is launching the protection and promotion of the vaulted tomb at Georgiko-Xinoneri Karditsa, one of the best preserved burial monuments of the Mycenaean period in Thessaly.
The vaulted Mycenaean tomb of Georgikos-Xinonerios is located at the site “Koufia Rachi”, at a distance of approximately five kilometers from Karditsa, it dates to 1400 BC and is one of the few Mycenaean burial monuments that have been identified and excavated, in the Region of Thessaly, that are preserved in such good condition of preservation
During the gradual removal of the stones, a multitude of small objects, clay and metal, were found, which led to the conclusion that the area was used, in later times, as a “Sanctuary of the ancestors”.
The works to protect and shape the tomb are accompanied by interventions to fix the slopes, highlight the monument and visitor routes.
According to the Ministry of the Interior, the planned interventions are developed around two main axes: 1. The routes of the visitors, and 2. The design of auxiliary buildings (outpost, warehouse, WC) to serve the public and the staff.
With the planned interventions, the monument is protected and highlighted and made accessible to all groups of the public.
Visitors will be able to visit the inside of the monument and tour the surrounding area, while for people with difficulty accessing the interior, a tour of the area through 3D imaging is planned.”
