The legal battle between Angelina Jolie, 49, and Brad Pitt, 60, over the sale of the French winery Château Miraval has entered a new chapter. The actress won a dispute over alleged abuse committed by the actor during their relationship, which lasted 12 years until the divorce was announced in 2016. The divorce was made official seven years after the separation, in 2023.
In the court ruling in favor of Jolie, the judge responsible for the case authorized the disclosure of a series of private documents that Brad Pitt’s lawyers were reluctant to present. In the opinion of the actress’s legal representatives, these documents would be evidence of “false communications, lies to the authorities and years of deception” on the actor’s part.
“We want to emphasize that Angelina never wanted things to come to this. She never pressed charges, left them all their property and was the one who tried to sell the business to him in the first place,” said Paul Murphy, one of the actress’ lawyers. “Mr. Pitt has never been held accountable for his actions and has always controlled Miraval and the winery, but he still demands more.”
Pitt’s lawyers called the release of the content “unnecessary and intrusive, a sensationalist exposé.” According to People magazine, the court decision drew attention to the possibility that the development of events could end up further exposing the alleged abuse committed by Pitt during the period he was married to Jolie.
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt bought the French winery in 2008, and it was there that the then couple exchanged rings in 2014. The actor filed the lawsuit against his ex, regarding the sale of Château Miraval, in 2021, claiming that she broke an agreement verbal established by them when selling their part of the establishment to Russian billionaire Yuri Shefler.
According to Brad, the consent of both parties was necessary before any negotiation involving the winery. Jolie, on the other hand, stated that she tried to sell her percentage of the company to her ex-husband, but did not agree to the confidentiality agreement proposed by the actor as a mandatory clause in the sales contract.
