Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio played the iconic couple in “Titanic” 30 years ago, but comments about the actress’ appearance haunt her to this day.
During an interview, she became emotional when recalling the criticism she suffered at the time and reflected on the criticism she still receives.
“It’s totally scary. What kind of person do they think they are to do something like that to a young actress who is just trying to discover herself?” he asked on 60 Minutes.
The actress’s outburst came after the report showed a journalist’s comment about Kate’s appearance on the red carpet at the 1998 Golden Globes. In the clip, it is possible to hear comments that she looked “melted” in her dress, which would need to be “Two sizes bigger to fit.”
The artist said that, throughout her career, she managed to counter some attacks face to face. In one of them, she would have wanted the person to be haunted by what they said.
“It was a big moment because it wasn’t just for me, it was for all those people who were subjected to that level of harassment. It was horrible. Really bad.”
However, according to her, comments about actresses’ appearance are still common today. In her most recent role, in “Lee”, she plays war photojournalist Lee Miller
“People say, ‘You were so brave for that role, you didn’t wear makeup, you had wrinkles.’ Do we say to men, ‘You were so brave for that role, you grew a beard’?” he asked. “It’s not being brave, it’s playing a role,” she continued.
