A Brazilian judge ordered the worldwide withdrawal of the song “Million Years Ago” of the British pop superstar, Adeleincluding streaming services- after treatment that filed for plagiarism by a country composer.

In case of non-compliance Sony and Universal subsidiaries in Brazil, as well as its companies Adeleface an $8,000 fine. However, the music giants retain the right to appeal the decision.

The temporary injunction was issued by Judge Victor Torres on Friday in a Rio de Janeiro court, pending further proceedings in the plagiarism case.

According to the ruling, Sony and Universal must stop “immediately worldwide, using, reproducing, processing, distributing or marketing the song ‘Million Years Ago'” in any way, medium, physical or digital support, streaming or sharing platform’.

“This is a landmark for Brazilian music, which…has often been hijacked to create successful international hits” Fredimio Trota, lawyer for Brazilian composer Toninho Geraes, who filed the complaint, told AFP.

Trotta also said his company this week will work to ensure that radio and television stations and streaming services around the world are notified of the Brazilian court’s decision.

According to the composer, Adele’s 2015 song allegedly copied the song’s music “Mulheres” (Women), recorded by the Brazilian singer, Martinio da Villaon a 1995 album.

“Foreign producers and artists who…have Brazilian music ‘on their radar’ for possible illegal use will think twice, given this decision” the lawyer stated. Both Sony and Brazil’s Universal Music have not issued any statement on the matter, according to the Guardian.
