The British writer David Lodge, best known for the novel “The world is small!”, part of a trilogy in which he sarcastically describes the academic environment, has died at the age of 89, announced the publishing house that represented him.
“His death is a huge loss for all of us at Penguin Random House and for British letters” the publishing house reported.
Lodge died “quietly” on January 1, surrounded by his family.
“We are very proud of his creations and the pleasure his novels have brought to so many people” said his children.
Who was David Lodge
THE Lodge he was an emeritus professor in the chair of Modern English Literature at his University Birmingham, member of the Royal Society of Letters and had been ordained Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters in 1998. His works have been translated into 24 languages. He was twice nominated for the prestigious Booker Prize.
In his works, inspired by his own experiences at the university, he vividly described the academic world, through two representatives of this “minority of deteriorating puritanism”of the Englishman Philip Shallow and the American Morris Zap.
THE David Lodge was born on January 28, 1935 in Dulwich, a suburb of London. His father was a musician in a dance orchestra. From his depressed mother he believed he inherited his chronic anxiety, another dominant personality trait. He studied literature at University College London and in 1960 began teaching himself at the University of Birmingham. In 1987 he retired to devote himself exclusively to writing. In his best-selling novel “The Cure” (1995) describes the environment of media elites and television in particular.
“His contribution to literature was enormous, both through criticism and through his iconic novels that have already become classics” its publisher said, Liz Foley.
His wife, whom he met when he was 18, died in January 2022. In 2008, he explained in an interview with the Guardian newspaper that he was “rather modest” in his life. “I stayed in the same place. It is important for the couple to have a stable life. People divorcing, remarrying, having custody of their children and all the rest of it… It’s an incredible waste of time and energy.”he had stated.
