The year was 1998. Actress Fernanda Torres, at 32 years old, had no idea of the paths she would take, much less the giant awards she would win and compete for in the future.

In a video that has gone viral on social media, she appears in an interview with Roda Viva (Cultura) 27 years ago. At the time, he said he would never compete for an Oscar.

The speech was made while she was telling a story about an uncle of hers, named Paulo, who dreamed of seeing his niece at the awards ceremony.

“When I won Cannes (as best actress for ‘I know I will love you’, in 1986), there in Tijuca, my uncle Paulo turned to me. I don’t think he even knew where Cannes was. He said: ‘ I want to see you at the Oscars one day.’ I looked at him and said: wow, Uncle Paulo has no idea how hard it is to get here.

On the web, many people joked about it. “Totally wrong” was one of the phrases most used by followers.

Fernanda was nominated for an Oscar for best actress for her performance in Walter Salles’ “I’m Still Here”. In parallel, the film competes for the categories of best film and best international film.

Torres is the second Brazilian nominated in the actress category. The first was his mother, Fernanda Montenegro, who competed in the film “Central do Brasil”, also directed by Salles, in 1999. The winner of the ceremony on that occasion was Gwyneth Paltrow, who starred in “Shakespeare in Love”.
