The location of the sculpture entitled “The Tree of Memory” for the victims of Tempi, in a green area in the “Garden of the afternoon Sun” on the New Beach, was approved by the Thessaloniki Municipal Council at its tonight’s regular meeting.

Initially the sculpture had been decided to be placed in the port of the city, in place of the old dock, but due to its high weight, about 5 to 6 tonnes, it was estimated that there would be static problems and it was necessary to transport it to a new spot.

The sculpture is donated to Tempi Victims Association and will consist of marble asymmetric rock totaling 1.80m x 1.80m x 1.00m high as base and will support a 4 -meter -high metal tree with a diameter of twigs of approximately 3.20m.

The work of the construction of the sculpture and its placement will be performed with the care and costs of the donor. According to the proposal of the Association, the Municipality of Athens and the Municipality of Thessaloniki are the beginning and end of a route that unites the two cities in a common drama. In Athens there will be a sculpture “The Tree of the Souls” (the beginning) and in Thessaloniki the work “The Tree of Memory” (the end).
