Can art signify our lives?

A documentary produced by Onassis Culture, on the occasion of Dimitris Papaioannou’s transverse orientation show.

Director Eva Stefanis follows the preparation and tour of the European scenes of the project’s transverse orientation of the leading Greek creator, produced by the Onassis Foundation, and observes a breath away from Dimitris Papaioannou and his associates in their work. Her camera recorded scenes from rehearsals for two years during the Pandemic and performances in Paris, London, Vilnius and other international destinations until the last performance in San Francisco. The central question that her documentary, the heart of the Taurus, is “why do we do what we do?”, Highlighting art as a means of resistance to the futility of things, but also as a way of signifying our own life. The film premieres at the 27th Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival and participates in the feature -length international documentary.

Dimitris Papaioannou’s acquaintance with Eva Stefanis decades ago and their collaboration so many years later in a different documentary. Dimitris Papaioannou, with his endless curiosity and wonderful look, depicts the human body on stage, trying to record every movement, every emotion. Eva Stephanie, on the other hand, with her cinematic look, records Dimitris himself, reflecting his creative process.

The film explores the dynamics of a work of art, revealing the moments of anxiety, uncertainty, and the absolute confidence that characterize the world of a rehearsal, hope in times of crisis, the loss that is transformed into creation. Papaioannou, through her lens Stephanie, reveals his joys, phobias and desires. The film, however, is not just a documentary on a show or an artist, but a study of the nature of creation. And as Dimitris Papaioannou says in a scene of the heart of the Taurus, “the joy of art is that it gives you the feeling that there is something beyond the life you live.”

Eva Stefanis says of the heart of the Taurus: “I know Dimitris Papaioannou since I was 17 years old and I always wanted to make a documentary about him. When he suggested that I make the making of preparation of the “Transverse Orientation”, I was thrilled. However, at the same time, Kovid was in a long rise in pan -European, which led to successive postponements of the show. Along with the climate of uncertainty created by the delays and the disease of the disease, the question once again asked: “What is the meaning of art in times of crisis?” The documentary begins as a mere recording of a group of dancers and techniques to give meaning to the daily routine of preparing a show that may never be done. At the same time, it is the portrait of an artist who has the ability to inspire his collaborators and seduce his audience with works that combine pain, heart and beauty. The documentary was filmed with a very small workshop (2 or 3 people), following the Direct Cinema method so that we are as quiet as possible. We experimented a lot with the image, and especially with out of focus shots that we considered to deliver the open atmosphere we felt by watching the work. My intention was the documentary to give, at least to some extent, the experience of “Transverse Orientation”. Sensuality, darkness and riddle. In addition, to let go of the trenches that allow a window into the composite psyche of the genius artist. “

The premiere will take place on Monday, March 10, at 8pm, in Olympion, in the presence of contributors. Will follow q & a.

The second screening will take place on Tuesday, March 11, at 13:00, in the John Kassavetis Hall, Warehouse 1, Port.
