The sculpture has been on display at the Louvre Museum since 1884. It is one of the three winged victories found in the Temple of Samothrace. The other two are exposed to the first, which is a Roman copy and was found by Austrian archaeologists at the Kunthistorisches Museum, Vienna, and the second, found by the American mission of Karl Lehmann and Phyllis Williams-Lehmann in 1949, at the Archaeological Museum of Samothrace.
Lehmann and his wife later found (in 1950) in excavations and parts of the right hand of the statue. A few months after the same pair of archaeologists also found fingers of the right hand of the same victory at the aforementioned Austrian Museum, which was unaware of them and did not know that they belonged to it. Her right palm was reconstituted, revealing that she did not hold trumpets as many believed until then and was also on display in the Louvre, in a separate showcase near the statue.
The statue is 3.28 m high (with wings) and 5.58 m with the marble bow on which it is located today. It was crafted to honor the goddess Niki but also a naval battle – it is not certain. It was dedicated to a temple of Samothrace and dates between and 220 and 190 BC. – Most estimates converge in 190 BC. Today at the Louvre Museum it is located on a base and in turn it is mounted on a marble bow. In antiquity it is believed that the one who dedicated the work to the Temple of Samothrace (a place famous in antiquity for his sacredness) had placed an order to design a small cluster of goddess and ship.
The goddess was crafted separately from white Parisian marble and perhaps holding a wreath for the winner or had her hand raised in his mouth to make the victory without holding anything or, finally, he was greeted. The ship was made of marble of Rhodes (the grayish marble of Lindos and in particular of Lardo).
One version of archaeologists for the tribute for many years was that Dimitrios the Siege had done it (337-283 BC) when he defeated Ptolemy’s fleet off Cyprus around 290 BC. Today, however, many believe that the Rhodians dedicated it when in 191 BC, with Pergamon, defeated Antiochus III of Syria in a naval battle off Sidis.
The right wing was found almost dissolved in addition to its small pieces and is an additional “mirror” reconstruction work of the left, by experts in the Louvre. The statue is believed to have been dispersed and broke due to a major earthquake in the 6th century AD. century.
