“Chora, I see you”: Olympia Film Festival presents 10 emblematic films of Greek cinema

As part of the events for the 25 years since its founding, the Olympia International Film Festival for Children and Youth presents in Pyrgos and Amaliada, in collaboration with the Hellenic Film Academy, ten emblematic films from the rich heritage of Greek cinema of the 20th century.

The films will be screened with free admission for all every Tuesday at the Cine Cinema of Amaliada and every Wednesday at Orpheus of Pyrgos. These are some of the most award-winning films of the current that appeared in the 1970s and were characterized as “New Greek Cinema” (“Evdokia” by Alexis Damianos, “The Consul of Anna” by Pantelis Voulgaris, “John the Violent” by Tonia Marketaki , “Megara” by Sakis Maniatis and George Tsemperopoulos, “The troupe” by Theodoros Angelopoulos, “The other letter” by Lambros Liaropoulos) but also older, of the 1960s (“Mandalena” by Dinos Dimopoulos, “The block” by ‘ Adonis Kyrou, “Z” by Costas Gavras) and even older such as “Forgotten Faces” by George Tzavellas. All films are restored and screened from new high quality digital copies.

The COUNTRY, I SEE YOU is a program for the rescue, restoration and screening of films of the Greek cinema of the 20th century, implemented by the Hellenic Film Academy in the context of the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution under the auspices of the Greece 2021 Commission, sponsored by the National Audiovisual Center. of the Hellenic Cinema Center, the Athens Epidaurus Festival and the Thessaloniki Film Festival, with the support of the Greek Film Archive and Finos Film.

It consists of a total of 42 films of large, medium and short length, fiction, documentaries and hybrids, others classic, others rare, all unique in their kind, of which 30 are restored with new digital copies with curated by the Hellenic Film Academy. The process of digitization and restoration of classic titles of Greek cinema creates a legacy for the future with new archives, accessible to the next generations of cinema professionals and film lovers, with subtitles in English and Greek for the deaf and hard of hearing.

The program accompanies a special edition, in which the films and their era “converse” with theorists and cinematographers, through texts and other designs, while an educational suitcase is created, which will be deposited in selected university institutions and libraries around the world.
