On the occasion of the celebration of the World Theater Day (27/3), the Cultural Foundation of Piraeus Group (PIOP) organizes an event for the Shadow Theater, in its Historical Archive in Tavros, on Wednesday, March 30 (18:30).
The Shadow Theater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is an evolving art form. A timeless type of theater that, although its origins go back to the past, nevertheless “converses” continuously with the present. Thus, the Shadow Theater, with its tangible messages and its lively and modern speech, interacts with current events, maintaining a special place in the hearts of young and old, but also inspiring young artists in original compositions and creations.
At the event, keynote speakers will highlight just these aspects. In particular, the theatrologist Anthi G. Hotzakoglou, PhD candidate of the Department of Theatrical Studies EKPA and researcher in this field, will present the historical course of the Shadow Theater, its process of “Hellenization”, as well as its relations with the theater. Then, the playwright Gogo Varzelioti, associate professor of the Department of Theatrical Studies EKPA, will present anecdotal material of the karaoke player, transporting us to the living world of an important creator and artist of the 20th century. Finally, the playwright-karaoke player Nikolas Tzivelekis will talk about the “today” of the Greek shadow theater. The round of presentations will end with an open discussion for the public.
It will be followed by a performance with the bard of Nikolas Tzivelekis and the one-act play “The Intelligence of Karagiozis”.
The event will be coordinated by Ourania Karagianni, PhD in Archeology, Head of the PIOP Publications Service.
