Adele says she reconciled with her father shortly before his death

In an interview with presenter Oprah Winfrey, aired this Sunday (14) in the United States, Adele, 33, spoke about the difficulties in her relationship with her father and how she reconciled with him shortly before his death. In the two-hour special, the singer also stated that the hardest part of her separation from Simon Konecki was explaining the decision to Angelo, 9, the couple’s only child.

Adele said she met her father, Mark Evans, shortly before he died in May this year, aged 57, of bowel cancer. She said she understood that it was alcoholism that drove him away from the family. Evans abandoned his daughter when he was 3 years old. Until her early teens, he was still present on school holidays. But after that, it disappeared for many years.

“My father’s absolute lack of presence and interest… But I finally understood it was alcohol… It was alcohol that took my father away from me,” she said, crying, according to the Daily Mail. “Once I understood that I realized I had a lot of work to do with me, I stopped drinking and started working out a lot.”

In 2012, the singer was angered by an interview in which Evans gave in which he claimed to have been a “rotten father” and suggested that Adele’s relationship problems were his fault.

In conversation with Oprah, the singer said that she was able to make peace with her father when he was able to understand how much he hurt her after listening to her daughter’s songs. “He then finally understood my childhood traumas through my songs,” he reported.

Adele also talked about Simon Knecki’s separation and how embarrassed she felt that her marriage didn’t work out, as well as her parents’. “Nothing has been as scary as what I’ve gone through for the past two years behind closed doors,” he said. She added that divorce was inevitable.

The hardest part was telling her son Angelo, who was then 6 years old. “[…]try to explain to a child that i love him [Konecki], but I’m just not in love with him anymore.” She added that her ex-husband is still present and is a fundamental part of her and her son’s life.
