Billy Joel, one of the most established names in American music, had to abruptly interrupt her concert schedule after receiving the diagnosis of a rare neurological condition.

At 76, the singer and pianist was diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus (HPN), a disease that affects the brain and compromises motor and sensory functions.

The decision to cancel the commitments came after medical recommendation. According to a statement published on the artist’s social networks, the symptoms of the disease (such as imbalance, alterations in hearing and vision) would have been aggravated by the latest live performances. Joel now goes through specialized physiotherapy and will continue away from stages to new evaluation.

“Billy is receiving care of excellence and focused entirely on his recovery. By medical advice, he will stay off stage at this time,” says the official note.

Normal pressure hydrocephalus is a syndrome that manifests itself mainly in older people, caused by the abnormal accumulation of fluid in the cerebral ventricles. This generates internal pressure, compromising areas responsible for locomotion, memory and meanings.

Joel had at least 17 scheduled shows between the United States and England, including a tour of major stadiums. His last presentation took place in February, in the city of Uncasville, in Connecticut. In March, the musician had already signaled a four -month break, claiming that he would undergo surgery and rehabilitation. The initial forecast was to return in July, with a show in Pittsburgh, but the plans were suspended.

Rock and pop piano icon, Billy Joel won fans around the world with hits such as “Piano Man”, “Uptown Girl” and “Just the Way You Are”. The artist, who would complete 100 performances at Madison Square Garden this year, has not yet released a new forecast to resume the tour.
