Michelle Obama talks how she reacted to her daughter Malia’s decision to remove the surname

by

Michelle Obama, as well as much of humanity, had a certain work with both daughters during adolescence. To the podcast Sibling Revelry, presented by Kate and Olivia Hudson, former American first lady said Malia, 26, and Sasha, 23, departed from her parents at this stage of life.

“Our daughters definitely didn’t want to be little princess in the White House,” he said. Michelle also revealed how she and her husband, former American president Barack Obama, reacted when the oldest Malia said she would no longer use her surname professionally.

The change surfaced for the rest of the world during the premiere of Malia’s first movie “The Heart” at the Sundance Festival in February 2024. The short film was written and directed by her and, in the credits, nothing “Obama”: appeared as Malia Ann, taking many people by surprise.

The parents, however, already knew. And supported her.

“You try to differentiate yourself, I understand,” said the former first lady, adding to consider essential that daughters feel owned by their own achievements, without the presidential surname overshadow talent and effort. “It is very important for my children to feel that they have achieved what they have.”

Michelle also said that her daughters are very aware that they don’t want to be seen as who has won everything in tray. On the contrary: they want to prove that they run behind and work hard.
