“Former Olympicador Fernando Scherer, Xuxa, opened the game about his personal challenges in a recent interview with GQ magazine.” He revealed that he suffered from addictions in alcohol and pornography.

“There is a whole culture of selling this, of eroticizing women in every way, and looks natural. It’s not natural,” he told the publication. The former athlete stated that addiction directly influenced the ability to affect with others.

Xuxa started psychological treatment in 2008 after retiring from the pools. Overcoming the picture and addictions came, according to him, through therapy, meditation and readings. Today, at age 50, he claims to live with “lightness” and enjoys life with children and grandchildren.

According to Scherer, alcohol abusive consumption is no longer a problem in 2020, after several interruption attempts started in 2011. He says that, even though he is aware of porn dependence at that time, he only recently managed to face it effectively.

“The laugh that I give myself today is only so tasty and so hot, because you look back and say, ‘My God, you didn’t need everything; but you needed it all,’ he says in the interview.

Talking about the subject

Since April 2024, Scherer has been addressing mental health issues on social networks when he exposed his experience with depression. The world champion also encourages followers to share personal experiences with addictions in some Instagram posts – where sharing motivational messages.

Fernando Scherer, known as “Xuxa”, won two Olympic bronze medals-a 50 meters free in Atlanta 1996 and one in the 4×100 meter relay free on Sydney2000-as well as world and Pan American titles throughout his career. Today, he acts as a mentor and speaker in high performance focused on mental health.

Addiction in pornography is a compulsive behavior recognized by the World Health Organization as a disorder of sexual behavior. Loss of control in consumption can affect relationships, emotional well-being and everyday performance and lead to the search for increasingly intense stimuli.
