The newer monument is characterized by the father’s house of Yiannis and Mikis Theodorakis, in Galata Chania, following the opinion of the Central Council of Modern Monuments (KSNM).

This decision paves the way for the complete restoration and reuse of the historic building, which will function as a place of culture and memory, dedicated to the life and work of the two creators, while enhancing the identity of the area.

Theodorakis house, a simple folk house with a garden, probably dates back to the 19th century and is located in the “Plakoura” or “Alonaki” location in Galata. There was a family refuge for Theodorakis and, for Mikey, in the period 1949–1954, a rest and creative regeneration, before his studies in Paris.

In the same place, the poet and journalist Yiannis Theodorakis was inspired by lyrics that were composed by his brother, giving Greek music timeless songs, such as “Lost” and “Beautiful City”.

Culture Minister Lina Mendoni said: “Today, exactly 100 years since the birth of Mikis Theodorakis, the characterization of his father’s home is an act of respect and responsibility towards the emblematic form of Greek culture. At this house, Mikis, after the harsh years of exile, regained his creative voice, while John, his brother, wrote lyrics that were composed and became symbols. This recognition coincides with the proclamation of 2025 by the Ministry of Culture as a “dedication year Mikis Theodorakis”, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birth. In the context of the anniversary, the state honors the multifaceted legacy of our great creator, with an extensive program of actions in Greece and abroad. Galatas, a place of root, inspiration and creation, will continue to keep his work and memory alive, remaining open to every visitor. “

At the same time, the Municipality of Chania is launching the market of a beautiful property owned by the Bank of Chania, with the aim of enhancing the functionality of the site.
