“Brice Marden and Greek Antiquity” – New exhibition at the Museum of Cycladic Art

In the context of the series of exhibitions “Divine Dialogues”, the Museum of Cycladic Art invites him this year American artist Brice Marden to present his work in dialogue with selected antiquities from the permanent collections of the museum.

The report entitled “Brice Marden and Greek Antiquity” will be held at Megaro Stathatou and will last from May 20 to August 29, 2022. This is first museum exhibition of the important artist in Greecewhich is organized by Museum of Cycladic Art in close collaboration with Marden and curator and artist Dimitrios Antonitsis.

Marden, who is in his eighties and has been around for sixty years, is still fascinated by his gestural simplicity. His work draws on the long history of art, combining elements from both him Minimalism and the Abstract Expressionism as well as from ancient calligraphy and poetry.

For the last fifty years the artist inspired by the Greek landscape and Greek antiquity. His relationship with Greece begins in 1971. He is immediately enchanted by the Greek light and buys his first house in Hydra together with Ellen, his wife who is also a painter. Since then they spend some time there every summer. The purity of the hydraulic landscape has profoundly influenced Marden, who observes nature and creates.

The exhibition at the Museum of Cycladic Art will include works from the whole range of the artist’s work which reveal Marden’s coordination with the metaphysics of ancient Greek heritage. Paintings, drawings, notebooks that reveal his sharp observation and rare abstract look, will be presented in a dialogue with selected antiquities from the permanent collections of the Museum of Cycladic Art, inviting the viewer to decode the visual vocabulary of this great artist.

THE Brice Marden was born in 1938 in Bronxville, New York. He lives and works in New York. His works have been included in museum collections around the world, and his major exhibitions include the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York (1975), A Retrospective of Paintings and Drawings at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. New York (2006-07, which traveled to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Hamburger Bahnhof-Museum für Gegenwart in Berlin), the Morocco exhibition at the Musée Yves Saint Laurent in Marrakesh (2019), the Think of Them as Spaces exhibition : Brice Marden’s Drawings at the Menil Collection in Houston (2020) and the Brice Marden exhibition. Inner Space at the Kunstmuseum Basel in Basel (2022).
