by

A Memorandum of Understanding for the cooperation in the field of Tourism between Greece and the USA was signed today between the Minister of Tourism Vassilis Kikilias and the Ambassador of the USA. in our country, Jeffrey Payat.

It is an update of the previous memorandum between the two countries signed 31 years ago, and its purpose is to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the field of Tourism, in order to increase bilateral trade in travel services between the two countries.

The Memorandum envisages, inter alia, the exchange of best practices regarding travel and tourism, the promotion of tourism and innovation and digitization in the provision of tourism services, the exchange of information on investment opportunities in the field of tourism, tourism statistics, data research, tourism policy and developments in the global tourism market, including new tourism products and services, as well as the exchange of know-how for the development of specific forms of tourism and the continuous upgrade in the field of tourism education and training.

In his speech, Mr. Kikilias noted:

“The Mitsotakis government, from the very beginning, put at the core of its strategy, the strengthening of our partnership with the United States in several policy areas, including tourism.

Greece and the United States, in the context of their strategic dialogue and multidimensional and flawless bilateral cooperation, today sign the Memorandum of Understanding in the field of Tourism, thus updating the previous one signed more than 30 years ago.

We sign it together with Ambassador Payat, just before the end of his extremely successful diplomatic mission here.

A mission that touched all Greeks with its immediacy, consistency and effectiveness and spoke to our hearts. So I would like to take this opportunity to thank him publicly for everything he has done as US Ambassador to Greece.

Today’s agreement – lasting 5 years – is another typical example of the flawless cooperation between our two countries in the field of tourism. It is at the same time an essential step to make this cooperation even more targeted and efficient in specific areas, especially in a time like today.

Our goal is to increase bilateral trade in travel services between the two countries

The strengthening of our cooperation is already evident. This year marks a record number of direct flights to the United States. 9 flights daily, more than 460,000 available airline seats, bring the two countries even closer.

This concerns not only the visitors but also the investors, who have turned their eyes to the country and we want to further strengthen the momentum between the two countries.

Our field of cooperation also concerns the exchange of know-how and the cooperation in the field of digitization, but also in the tourism education and training.

We are moving forward with steady steps in the development of a sustainable tourism model, with solid collaborations and vigilance to address the daily issues that arise, with the ultimate goal of creating added value for the Greek economy and every household. “

For his part, Mr. Payat said:

“Today’s signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding is not only representative of the great US-Greek tourism cooperation, but also of the overall bilateral relationship, which is at its best in recent years.

It is a relationship based on common democratic values that were born right here, just a few meters from us, in the Ancient Agora of Athens.

I am proud to announce that this year there will be up to 14 direct flights from the United States to Greece, foretelling a very good tourist season, in a market in high demand by American tourists.

As US cruise companies prepare to welcome the Greek summer and US hotels open their doors to welcome visitors from all over the world, we look forward to taking our tourism cooperation to the next level, promoting new opportunities for economic growth for both. Countries.

“We welcome more and more American citizens to Greece, promoting everything this beautiful country has to offer.”
