The 3rd International Symposium on a New Elefsina was completed with great success after a three -day three -day discussions and inspirational speeches, which start for new beginnings. On the subject of “re -re -emerging the world”, this year’s event explored how ancient wisdom, art, science and collective imagination can help us restore meaning, connection and care in our lives and our societies.
55 speakers, 16 discussions and central speeches, 4 workshops, 4 artistic events, 3 days – a symposium that opened new thought horizons. From 25 to 27 September 2025, the old Elefsina olive mill hosted “not a conference, but a meeting of people with common values and goals,” as Alexandra Mitsotakis, co -founder and president of the World Human Forum, typically said. A gathering of thinkers, artists, scientists and active citizens from all over the world – who share the belief that such ventures must lead from vision to practice. From citizens’ initiatives to renowned academics, from internationally recognized artists to leading scientists, and from local Eleusis organizations to global educational programs from India and Africa – the Symposium bridged the theory with practice.
We returned to the land of the Eleusinian Mysteries-where the inner transformation and the search for self-knowledge were once cultivated-to co-create a modern narrative of unity, reconnection and hope. The Symposium not only offered a space for reflection, but it was also the starting point of the idea for exploring the possibility of recognizing Eleusinian mysteries as UNESCO’s cultural heritage of humanity.

Toward a promising future for Eleusis
An important idea was deposited at the Symposium Session. Alexandra Mitsotakis emphasized the need for strong synergies that will support the next day of the city. In the trigger of an idea of a peer professor at the EKPA Pavlos Kavouras, he proposed to explore the possibility of recognizing Eleusinian Mysteries as UNESCO’s cultural heritage of humanity.
In her presentation at the Symposium, Christina Mercouri, director of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Western Attica, analyzed the historical, mythological and cultural dimensions of the Eleusinian Mysteries, emphasizing their contemporary significance. As he pointed out: “The Eleusinian Mysteries represent the most constant human effort to address fundamental existential questions through ritual, community and direct spiritual experience. Their success in the transformation of individual consciousness, while building social cohesion, offers valuable knowledge of modern efforts to tackle psychological discomfort, environmental crisis and social fragmentation. ”
