The biblical Mary Magdalene has been the subject of countless artworks, murals and even movies – but what did the devoted disciple and follower of Jesus really look like? On the occasion of the uproar caused by the trailer of the long-awaited sequel to the film “The Passion of the Christ”, directed by Mel Gisbon, historians and analysts reveal the profile of Mary Magdalene.

The original film, released in 2004, depicted the last 12 hours of Jesus’ life and starred Monica Bellucci as Mary Magdalene.
However, the upcoming sequel, The Resurrection of Christ, has recast Christ and his followers, with 36-year-old Mariela Gariga taking on the role of Mary Magdalene.
What Mary Magdalene Was Like and How Much She Would Look Like Mel Gibson’s New Star
Dr. Meredith Walker, a lecturer in Biblical and Religious Studies at the University of Sheffield, revealed what Christ’s devoted companion would actually look like, stressing that neither Bellucci nor Garriga were right for the role (although Gibson tried to get as close to the unknown as possible). .
Mary Magdalene came from the small fishing village of Magdala, located on the shores of the Sea of Galilee in present-day Israel.
As explained by Dr. Walker in the Daily Mail, that means she would be a woman of Middle Eastern or Mediterranean appearance – and certainly not white-skinned.
“We cannot know for sure what any historical figure would have looked like precisely, but he would have had the height, color and features in common with other people who lived in Roman Galilee and the surrounding areas.”
For her part, Professor of Christian Origins and Judaism at King’s College London, Joan Taylor, said that Mary Magdalene would be an “ordinary” woman, certainly not a beauty.
“Unfortunately, we have no archaeological evidence or modern descriptions that would allow us to know exactly what she looked like, but she would have been the same as any other woman from ancient Galilee,” he said.
The 2017researchers from the University of Versailles created a representation of Mary Magdalene, based on her supposed remains – a mummified skull and a tuft of hair – found in Provence.
Their depiction showed a woman with pointed nose, high cheekbones and round face. However, the scientific community remains skeptical of this depiction.
In any case, everyone agrees that Mary Magdalene would certainly not look like an Italian (Belucci) or a Cuban (Gariga) and would certainly not have the glamor and beauty of Hollywood stars.
