Iman talked about her marriage to him David Bowie and for all the times they almost met before their friends finally set them up on a blind date. The 70-year-old model said meeting the late artist was “destiny” as she recalled the romantic night they spent together.
Prior to this, Iman revealed that she had attended his concerts and intended to go backstage to meet the star, but that never happened, as she revealed in her interview with Spain’s ‘Elle’.
Asked if she believed she and David, who she was with until his death aged 69 in 2016, were “meant to be together”, Iman said: “No doubt. The first time I went to a concert of his was in New York in 1976. I was invited backstage to greet him, but I didn’t, and every time he played there, I always went to see him, although I never got to meet him.
In 1990, I moved to California to get away. I felt like I didn’t want to do anything and I wanted to think about what I wanted to do next. A week later, I met a photographer who introduced me to a hairstylist who was David’s hairstylist, although I didn’t know it either. We became friends and he was the one who arranged the blind date, saying it was a birthday party. David happened to be in Los Angeles that week for a concert… So yeah, it was my destiny. It just had to be that way”.
The couple met in 1990 and married in 1992. They had two wedding ceremonies, a private one in Switzerland on April 24, 1992 and an official ceremony in Florence, Italy on June 6, 1992.
Describing their first meeting, he said: “On a blind date, well, it wasn’t exactly a blind date, we were supposed to go to a birthday party, which ended up being a dinner for four with David, his hairdresser, who was my friend, his friend and me”.
When asked if the dinner went well – which of course it did – he said: “Yes. The most romantic part of the night was when David and I were walking down the street, my shoelaces came untied and he knelt down to tie them for me (sighs).”
The model has not remarried since David died of liver cancer. The couple was married for 23 years.
Iman also opened up in 2022 about how she refuses to refer to the music legend as her “deceased” husband and discussed the difficulties she faced in finding a place to mourn privately following his death. “He is my husband. I don’t mind being called “David Bowie’s wife” at all. But I always remind people that I was there before I met him.”.
When she found the space to mourn privately after his death, she added: “It was too much. Too. We were living a very private life and suddenly I felt like there was a target on my daughter’s head and mine.

As for what the future might bring, Iman said: “Now I consider myself a mother and a grandmother first… That’s my place in life. I can’t wear heels anymore. I know my limits.”
