A “Portrait of Elvira” by Amedeo Modigliani sold to auction in Paris for 27 million euros, setting a new record for a work by the Italian painter in France. The announcement was made by Sotheby’s auction house.

The portrait was created in 1918/19 and depicts a young woman from Caen-sur-Mer, a model that Modigliani painted repeatedly during his time in the region. The initial estimate for its price ranged between 5.5 and 7.5 million euros.

In another sale, another Modigliani painting, a rare portrait of Raymond Radige – later author of the novel “The devil in her body” – sold for 10.6 million euros. The work was created in 1915, when Radige was only 12 years old. Modigliani met the then young Radiguet in artistic circles in Montparnasse.

Earlier, the first of the famous paintings in the series “Black magic” by the Belgian René Magritte was also sold at an auction by the same house for 10.7 million euros. The work was created in 1934, and the previous owners had acquired it directly from Magritte the following year.

The previous record for a table in the series “Black magic” amounted to 5.7 million euros.
