The National Library of Greece, on the occasion of the World Book Day designated by UNESCO on 23/04, carries out a series of activities aimed at creating books and contact with the art of bookbinding, its materials and techniques. The participants will take part in three different activities, depending on their age group, which will be implemented on Saturday 16/04/2022 and Sunday 17/04/2022.
Specifically:
Saturday 16/04, time 11:00 – 13:00
Action: “Enter the adventure of bookbinding”, for children 9-12 years old (up to 15 children)
Venue: Children’s workshop EBE – Ground floor
Hardcover binding. Binding of a personal book. This type is a simple form of bookbinding ideal for elementary school children. This is how single-page books are usually tied, and are printed sheet by sheet as we do with our home printer. Together with two cats, Tela and Spago, the children will learn how to tie a book through a toy. The laboratory includes an individual suitcase with all materials. These are for tying! Are you too?
Saturday 16/04, time 17:00 – 19:00
Action: “Superheroes”, Creating a board game for parents and children 5-8 years (up to 16 people)
Venue: Children’s workshop EBE – Ground floor
Concertina or accordion bookbinding. Accordion books are the easiest form of bookbinding because they can be made without sewing. They consist of a continuous folded sheet of paper that if we get up we can see all the pages at once. This style of bookbinding has a rich, global history and is an excellent canvas of expression. The construction is adapted to the age of the children in order to create a board game which is hand-painted and allows you to intervene and set your own rules as many times as you want, to color it, and to bring it to your measurements. It can be creative for the whole family. Individual kits with bookbinding materials are included in the laboratory.
Sunday 17/04, time 10:00 – 14:00
Action: “The Big Book of EBE”, for children from 12 years and adults
Venue: EBE Book Tower Hall – Ground floor
An oversized book, with dimensions 50X70 closed, which will consist of 400 pages, will be created in an open experiential workshop for the public in order to stay in EBE and to remind this action and to be used in all other actions as a book of impressions. , creative writing and expression. The workshop is open to children mainly over 12 years old and adults. The participants will alternate as anyone can take part and for as long as they want.
The workshop will involve tailor-made bookbinding with the cover technique. The binding of the book that includes the sewing of the leaves is called sewing bookbinding and creates a book with great durability over time.
The above actions are implemented in collaboration with the Art Bookbinding NP Livadiotis.

According to the latest measures of protection of public health from the risk of spreading the coronavirus COVID-19, in the areas of the laboratories the visitors enter after a obligatory demonstration at the entrance:
- vaccination or disease certificate in force for adults
- valid vaccination or disease certificate, pcr (72 hours) or rapid (48 hours) or self test (24 hours) for minors four (4) to seventeen (17) years
Upon entry of the visitors, the above certificates are displayed either printed from the digital platform www.gov.gr or electronically through a mobile device with simultaneous identity check of the holder. Alternatively, if the above certificates are presented by a foreigner from a third country (outside the European Union), the certificates are checked in paper form with a simultaneous identity check of the holder.
Finally, the use of the mask is mandatory in all areas of the exhibition.
