Celebrities pay tribute to former player Freddy Rincón, idol of Corinthians

Former Colombian football player Freddy Eusebio Rincón Valencia, better known as Freddy Rincón, passed away this Wednesday (13) at the age of 55. Corinthians idol, the former athlete was hospitalized after suffering a car accident last Monday (11).

After the news, released in a statement, famous fans and Brazilian sports clubs paid tribute to the former star. “No words. Rest in peace Captain,” wrote actor Dan Stulbach. “Rest in peace, Rincon! Thank you for everything! For Corinthians, with lots of love, until the end!”, said comedian Victor Sarro.

“It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to a great idol. Our captain in the first world title, Freddy Rincón passed away in the early hours of this Thursday. Forever in our hearts”, wrote the official Corinthians profile on his Twitter.

“Rest in peace, you are eternal, Rincón!”, honored commentator Marco Bello Jr. “Clube de Regatas do Flamengo deeply regrets the death of former Colombian player Freddy Rincón. May God comfort his family and friends from Rincón, who was an idol of his national team and of several Brazilian clubs in his victorious trajectory in football”, wrote the Flamengo team.

“Santos FC deeply regrets the death of former player Freddy Rincón. The Colombian legend defended Peixão between 2000 and 2001. Our feelings to all the friends and family of the player, who will never be forgotten by the Santos nation. peace, Rincón!”, honored Santos Futebol Clube.

The vehicle he was in collided with a bus at dawn on Monday (11), in Cali, in the San Fernando neighborhood. According to local authorities, the car broke a red light at high speed and was hit sideways. There were two women with Rincón, who had minor injuries. The bus driver had a broken leg.

Admitted to Clínica Imbanaco with traumatic brain injury, Rincón underwent a nearly three-hour surgery. Early medical reports said he was in “very critical condition” and “with advanced support measures”. On Wednesday night, already Thursday morning in Brazil, the clinic announced the death.

Rincón received honors from several clubs he passed through, such as Independiente Santa Fe, América de Cali, Palmeiras, Santos and Corinthians. After returning to Palmeiras in 1996, he changed his shirt and started to wear the one for Corinthians in 1997.

In black and white, Rincón, who was a striker and midfielder, became an exceptional midfielder, initially by decision of coach Joel Santana. In 1998, when he won the Brazilian Championship for the first time, he started to form a historic white midfield with Vampeta, Ricardinho and Marcelinho.
