The performance “Witches” on World Mother’s Day

by

On Sunday, May 8, International Mother’s Day, in the emblematic space of the Municipal Slaughterhouses of Tavros (Piraeus 225), which opens its gates for the first time after the catastrophic fire, the stage composition is presented “Witches / Slaughterhouses: the meal».

The play is based on the homonymous work of the novelist Natasa Sideris, directed by Thanasis Dovris and features the actress Nikol Dimitrakopoulou, the mezzo-soprano Anastasia Kotsali and the accordionist Costas Ziggeridis.

The “Witches” of our time were written on the occasion of the recent incidents of violence against women in our country. They converse with baroque pieces of music and free improvisations. Drawing material from both historical recordings of gender-based violence committed on European soil and from the Greek oral tradition (the second part of the play speaks to the absurdity of “The Bridge of Arta”) as well as the modern paradoxical “Greekness”, the work highlights women’s issues that arise through narratives of the past as living demands of the present.

The Municipal Slaughterhouses of Taurus will be the second stop of this ongoing project. The first stop was the open-air Sculpture Gallery of Zongolopoulos. With reference to the iconic sculptures of the artist, the show was part of the UN initiative to eliminate violence against women.

The show converses again with this historically charged space, remaining faithful to the logic of creating a project that will remain permanently in progress.

The action is carried out with the support of the Attica Region and the entrance for the public is free, in order of priority.
