May Day at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center

by

On Sunday, May 1st, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) celebrates Spring with a big celebration in the flowered Stavros Niarchos Park.

From morning until late afternoon, music, dance, books, creative work and May Day activities unfold in every corner of the Park and invite us to return to the open spaces of the SNFCC, turning a blind eye to summer.

All the events of May Day are realized thanks to the donation of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (ISN).

The program in detail:

MUSIC

Wedding Singers

(12.30-14.30, Xefoto. Admission free)

On May Day, Stavros Niarchos Park is flooded with music and smiles and invites us all to experience unforgettable spring moments together, but also a first sense of summer. At 12:30, we meet the Wedding Singers at Xefoto, for a concert with a 90’s atmosphere, full of… star dust, love, humor and dance music. The band that associated its name with the inspirational covers of songs that we have all loved, makes its own musical May Day wreath with electric sound and elevated mood. The non-stop 90’s mix and the endless energy of Wedding Singers set up a big party at the SNFCC, for those who are and those who remain young. The party starts at 11.00 with a dance DJ set by Dimitris Lilis.

Music by the Canal: Rudy Roots

(18.00-20.00, Canal Café, Free entrance)

The sound of Rudy Roots is a mixture of hip hop, jazz, but also Greek elements that at its core maintains the LA sound. Swinging beats, uplifting melodies, vibrating bass lines, samples, loops and a fresh approach are just some of the elements that characterize the project, which always aims to serve the party and the dance.

ARTISTIC

-Takis, Signal

(Sunday 01/05 – Monday 31/10, Small Market, Free entrance)

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) in collaboration with the Takis Foundation – Research Center for Art and Science (KETE), welcomes in the Small Market of the Cultural Center two Signals of the internationally renowned artist Takis (Panagiotis25-201-201 .

The Signals, which Takis inspired during his stay at Calais Railway Station, are the first series of works through which the artist moves from documentary sculpture to abstraction and creates his first kinetic sculptures. These are works that take various forms and various elements throughout the artistic career of Takis and that made him famous in the world art scene. At the top of the Signals stands an object – a symbol of the industrial age, which influenced Takis in various aspects of his sculpture.

The two works entitled “Wind (Signal)” and “Signal – Screw of Archimedes” are emblematic examples of Takis’s sculpture for public space. The “Wind (Signal)”, which moves in rotation thanks to the wind with a rhythm almost choreographed, rocks and makes visible to visitors the invisible force of the wind. The “Archimedes Screw”, an element that dominates both works, indicates movement, even if the work is static. It draws inspiration from the famous Archimedes Screw, it indicates a continuous and endless movement towards the universe, towards the cosmic forces. Thus, a way of communication is “established” between the existing world and a world invisible and unknown to ours.

READING CLUB

-Natural Stories: May Day Reading Club with Vangelis Hatzigiannidis

(18.30-20.30, Mediterranean Garden. Free participation with online pre-registration at snfcc.org. For adults.)

At 18.30 the SNFCC welcomes the author Vangelis Hatzigiannidis in the spring Mediterranean Garden for a festive special Reading Club on the occasion of his book, “Natural Stories”. Participants will have the opportunity to chat with the author and exchange thoughts and ideas.

A few words about the book: Eleven stories. Eleven Natural Stories. The title may seem ironic since they are all unusual, extreme, hard-to-believe stories, in a sense unnatural. But at the same time it is literal, as they all have to do with the power of Nature as it manifests itself in animals, plants, the human intellect, and even inanimate objects. A force that proves invincible and invincible, but man never ceases to seek a confrontation with it. With the outcome always predetermined. A man becomes a tree, a wasp family demands justice, a book is buried and transformed into a cactus, a hand-painted image suddenly appears on paper, a man receives slogans from the sun, a chair has a cellular memory. An imaginary world completely natural.

LABORATORIES FOR CHILDREN

In the first part of the workshop the participants will make and decorate their own magic clay wreath. They will work with the technique of sheet and clay. This will be followed by a fun game with ribbons and flowers with reference to the traditional custom of the swimsuit. The ceramics that will be made during the workshops will be baked and glazed. They will be delivered after 10 days to the SNFCC, from where the participants will be able to receive them.

They also make original flowers and insects from paper and recyclable materials to decorate the May Day wreath.
