“It’s really painful to watch, except for the dramatic hours that the people of Ukraine are going through because of the Russian invasion. the heinous looting of Scythian artifacts by the Melitopolis Museum. It is unfortunate that the barbarity of war is manifested by attacks on museums and everything that expresses the human spirit and culture. But this is not the first time Russia has treated works of art in this way.
Decades after the fall of the Nazi regime, Priam’s treasure trove from the Schliemann excavations was transported to Russia to be unveiled many years later, in 1993, at the Pushkin Museum. We unequivocally condemn these actions.
Already, at the last Council of Ministers of Culture of the European Union, in Luxembourg, called for measures to protect Ukraine’s cultural heritage, in particular the establishment of a Red List to prevent their illicit trafficking, the establishment of a platform for the collection of information on looting and theft of cultural property, and the adoption of ad hoc initiatives legal and institutional measures for the protection of the cultural heritage of Ukraine. The taking of these measures is now, apart from being necessary and urgent “.
