Italy’s Serie A attracts audiences from all over the world, but the way fans can view matches is changing as Italy’s top football division enters the metaverse.
The clash between leaders Milan and Fiorentina this Sunday (1st), at the famous San Siro stadium, was the first football match to be broadcast in which fans from Africa and the Middle East were able to watch from the “Serie A room in the metaverse of the Nemesis”.
Metaverse is a broad term. It generally refers to shared virtual world environments that people can access via the internet. The term can refer to digital spaces made more realistic by the use of virtual reality (VR) or augmented reality (AR).
During Milan’s match, with the leaders continuing their quest for the first Serie A title since 2011, users were able to interact with the various features present in the in-game room.
“We chose to be the first to broadcast a football match in the metaverse because we believe that the frontier of technological innovation is extremely important for a modern league like Serie A,” said Luigi De Siervo, CEO of the competition.
“The Middle East and North Africa represent a strategic area for us due to Gen Z’s dominant presence and particular receptivity to new developments.”
The league emphasized that this is just the beginning of a collaboration with Blockchain technology company ConsenSys and video game platform The Nemesis as they enter the rapidly changing digital world.
