Research on Byzantine church of Agios Georgios, in Kurbinovo, Northern Macedonia carried out, at the end of April 2022, by experts scientists of the European Center for Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Monumentsin order to prepare the maintenance study of the frescoes that are preserved inside and outside. It is one of the most important monuments of Byzantine Macedonia and preserves one of the leading sets of monumental paintings of the Komnenian era..
The staff of the conservators of EKBMM (Electra Karagiannidou, study manager, Asterios Apostolidis, Alexios Papapelekanos and Alexandros Konstantas), headed by the director Flora Karagianni, with the assistance of the staff (Oliviera Makrievska, Jovica Bogoojov and Mouston Monastery), under the direction of Meri Stojanova, carried out on-site exploration work on the monument, using specialized equipment which was transferred from Greece “of the latest technology and high definition”, as Mrs. Karagianni told the Athenian / Macedonian News Agency, adding that “this gives added value to all the analyzes we do there”.
The co-operation began last June, when the Ministry of Culture of Northern Macedonia signed the European Center for Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Monuments memorandum of cooperation, for the preservation of the frescoes of this great monument, the first memorandum of cooperation between Greece and Northern Macedonia in the field of Culture.
On-site investigations by the conservators of EKBMM followed and recently the competent services of the Ministry of Culture of Northern Macedonia approved the elaboration of the relevant relevant study, which includes dye sampling, multispectral archery, UV radiation, x-ray photography with tangential lighting.
The aim is to complete the best possible documentation of the original painting, to identify and verify possible paintings and all the operations it has undergone over the centuries, to record its pathology, and finally, the proposed interventions for their maintenance.
The study is expected to be completed by next July, where it will be submitted for approval by the competent bodies of the Ministry of Culture of Northern Macedonia. Then it is planned -in the fall- the EKBMM to proceed with the execution of the maintenance work of the murals at the expense of the Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports.
