In the procedures of installation of a slope lift and in the configuration of routes that will make the Acropolis of Lindos functionally accessible to the disabled and disabled, the Ministry of Culture and Sports is moving forward. According to a relevant announcement of the ministry, the intervention is part of the program of the Ministry of Culture for projects to improve accessibility to archaeological sites, which aim to upgrade the service infrastructure of the visitor, but also encouraging the participation of people with disabilities in the cultural process.
According to the same announcement, according to the competent services of the Ministry of Culture and Sports and Central Archaeological Council, given the geophysical morphology of the landscape, the only solution for the disabled to access the archaeological site of the Acropolis of Lindos was the installation of a modern elevator that will be located on the southeast side of the rock. For as long as the restoration works lasted (1988-2015) the materials and tools were lifted from the same point at the construction site. The visitor will tour the archeological site through specially designed paths, with stops in almost all monuments, while the construction of a second elevator inside the site is examined, leading from the level of the Stoa to the level of the Propylaea and the Temple.
For this intervention the Minister of Culture and Sports Lina Mendonistated: “After universal accessibility of the Acropolis of Athens, it is the turn of the Acropolis of Lindos, a first-line monument and a highly visited tourist destination, to become functionally accessible to all. Ensuring unhindered access to the archeological site of people with disabilities is a priority for the Ministry of Culture. During my last visits to Rhodes, we, in cooperation with our services, made it necessary to investigate a solution to the problem of accessibility. The slope lift improves overall access to the monument, enhances the animal welfare awareness of visitors, as the donkeys are transported and satisfies the self-evident and inalienable right of access of all citizens to this extremely important archaeological site. At the same time, the participation of people with disabilities in Culture, which is the main means of promoting social equality and justice, is encouraged and facilitated, and the visitor’s experience is upgraded, with a direct benefit for the offered tourist product “.
This will be followed by the preparation of a rock engineering study for the fixing of the rock and a study of geostatic adequacy for the suspension and receipt of loads, always with a view to the minimum possible intervention in the rock, but also the safety of visitors. The announcement of the Ministry of Culture also notes that side benefits from the construction of the slope lift are related to the configuration and promotion of the surrounding area that includes the repair and maintenance of the 650 m long path that passes through Voukopia and ends at the place where the elevator base is to be installed. The landscaping works will allow the creation of a small recreation area with unobstructed sea views, with provision for the construction of low stone walls and living rooms, as well as the installation of soft lighting. The works also include the preservation and marking of ancient rock paintings, located near the base of the elevator and the creation of a path to Spiliotissa, for access to the caves that were used in worship both in antiquity and in the Christian years.
