An excellent quality violin Strandivarius The three-hundred-year-old, who is rumored to have “played” in the Oscar-winning music of “The Wizard of Oz”, will be auctioned next month. According to the auction house Tarisio the precious violin is estimated to reach $ 20 million, due to its exceptional condition and history.

The rare Strandivarius belonged to the Russian violin virtuoso Toscha Seidel, born in Odessa who is considered one of the greatest violinists of the 20th century, famous for his rich tone and emotional intensity.

There are about 600 violins around the world made in Strandivari’s studio – the highest price ever auctioned online was $ 15.9 million in 2011, so this violin could set a new world record.

Tosa Seidel made his Carnegie Hall debut in New York in 1918 and toured the United States, Europe, and Australia during the 1920s.

In 1938 he moved to California where he made a career in film studios. He has participated (as a soloist) in many Hollywood productions, including “Intermezzo”, “Melody for Three”, and “The Wizard of Oz”.

Especially for Judy Garland’s favorite movie: “there’s a great violin solo in the small print,” says John Fricke, author of The Wonderful World of Oz and a leading historian of the MGM classic. It has not been confirmed but it is believed to be Seidel, as he is known to have been on a contract with MGM since February 1939 and most of Oz’s score was recorded in May 1939.

Notably, Seidel took violin lessons with the famous physicist Albert Einstein and later played together at a Bach charity violin concerto.

“It is a great pleasure to present this instrument, whose exquisite sound still speaks to us through many, classic recordings and cinematic scores performed by the incomparable Tosa Seidel”, said Carlos Tome, director of the house Tarisio. “We can imagine the emotion that this instrument has caused to countless musicians over the centuries.”

Tarisio will exhibit Seidel’s violin in London, Berlin, Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong and New York until auction day on June 9, Variety reports.
