Outdoor photo exhibition: “The war that should not have taken place”

The open-air photo exhibition co-organized by the Municipality of Athens and the Embassy of Ukraine has been launched, on Vasilissis Olgas Avenue in the center of Athenswith on the war in Ukraine and the title “The war that should not have taken place”.

The photos have been placed in special stands along the roadin the part where pedestrians can walk, have been pulled by φmany media reporters found on the front. Among them is the distinguished Greek photojournalist, Aris Messini – Chief photographer for L’Agence France-Presse (AFP) in Greece. The inauguration took place in the presence of the mayor of Athens, Costa Bakoyannis and the Ambassador of Ukraine to Greece, Sergei Sutenko.

Bakoyannis: Strong message against war, illegal and unjust Russian invasion

In his statements, Mr. Bakoyannis opposed the Russian invasion of Ukraine, while at the same time expressing the hope that the war will end and democracy and peace will triumph.

«This is a report that should never have been made, just as this is a war that should never have been made. All together, interpreting the feelings of all Athenians, we want to send a strong message. A message against the war, against this illegal, unjust and barbaric invasion. A message for peace and democracy. Do not have any doubt, ladies and gentlemen, that from the 24th of February we are all Ukrainians. The heroic, fighting people of Ukraine are fighting for their national independence, fights for his national rights, his national sovereignty. But he also fights for all of us. For the principles and values ​​of us all. I would like to say a big thank you to the Ambassador and the Embassy of Ukraine for the excellent cooperation we have developed from the very beginning. We are not satisfied only with symbolic initiatives, we also work very closely in hosting displaced Ukrainians here in Athens, with the hope of course that they will return to their homes soon. In the hope that war will end and both democracy and peace will triumph. Thank you very much“, Said the mayor of Athens, while then, speaking to TV crews, he stressed:”Every photo here, at the exhibition at Queen Olga, is a punch in the stomach. It captures the horrors and crimes of this war. “And all of us here, together with the Ukrainian embassy, ​​together with the Ukrainian community in Greece, are sending a strong message against this war, against the illegal and unjust Russian invasion.”.

The Ambassador of Ukraine, thanked Mr. Bakoyannis and the Municipality of Athens for organizing this exhibition and stressed, among other things: “These photos in this exhibition clearly show that the barbaric Russian tactics were aimed not only at military structures, but also at civilians, women , children, seniors, houses, hotels, kindergartens, all forms of life and cities of Ukraine. “Photographers took these photos to show evidence of all this, of the war crimes, of the atrocities committed in Ukraine by the Russian Federation.”

The exhibition will last until June 13.
