Luciano Szafir recovers from surgery to remove colostomy bag

A day after the reversal surgery to remove the colostomy bag, Luciano Szafir, 53, is already in his room at the Copa D’or hospital, in the South Zone of Rio. The procedure took six hours and, according to the adviser of the businessman and actor, he is recovering well, talks to his wife Luhanna Melloni, who accompanies him during hospitalization, and even talks on the cell phone with other family members. Szafir still does not have a hospital discharge forecast.

In June 2021, Luciano Szafir was diagnosed with Covid-19 and was hospitalized for about a month. The ex-husband of Xuxa Meneghel and father of the presenter’s only daughter, Sasha, was intubated due to complications from the coronavirus. The following month, Szafir had to undergo colostomy surgery in the bowel region. He suffered organ perforation due to the use of anticoagulants to treat a pulmonary embolism caused by the disease.

A colostomy is a type of opening in the large intestine for dropping stool or urine and stool into a pouch, when the bowel cannot be attached to the anus. There were 10 months with the type of collection bag in the belly and the wait for the reversal surgery, as the doctors attested that Luciano Szafir had fully recovered from the initial intervention in the intestine a short time ago.

Before the surgery, Szafir, who came to parade at São Paulo Fashion Week, in November last year, showing the colostomy bag, announced that he intends to continue fighting for the causes of ostomates. According to the Ministry of Health, there are more than 400 thousand ostomized people in the country and there is even a National Day, November 16, established by Law 11.506/2007 to disseminate information that contributes to combating prejudice against people who use the procedure of ostomy. People who, due to congenital malformations, intestinal tumors, inflammatory bowel disease, abdominal trauma, among other causes, underwent a surgical procedure to allow the output of feces or urine.
