The number of reported cases of Covid-19 in the state of São Paulo almost doubled from one week to the next, according to official data analyzed by the scientific committee that advises Governor Rodrigo Garcia (PSDB).
The daily average of new infections last week reached 4,830, up from 2,622 the week before, a jump of 84.2%.
It was the biggest jump since February, when cases exploded in the country and the daily average of infections in SP reached a peak of 14,542 notifications.
From that month until April, the drop in official cases was constant. In early May, however, the numbers began to fluctuate, until the jump seen last week.
The increase is considered “significant”, according to one of the state officials dealing with the epidemic.
In absolute numbers, however, the situation is still considered to be under control, as the occupancy rates of both ICU and ward beds are now stabilized, both at 35%.
Hospitalizations also continue to rise.
Last week, the daily average was 333 daily hospitalizations in the state. It is more than double that seen in early April, when the daily average of admissions reached the lowest level of the year, with 146 patients in hospitals.
Deaths have remained stable in the last two weeks, with a daily average of 39 fatalities.
It is more than double, however, the daily average of 17 deaths recorded at the beginning of the month.
The fall or rise curves of cases and hospitalizations for Covid-19 are always accompanied, weeks later, by an increase in deaths, by the interval that exists between the diagnosis, the attempt of treatment and the death of the patient.
