Study: Covid-19 patients are at higher risk for neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s

by

Patients after Covid-19 were found to be 3.5 times more likely to be diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, 2.6 times more likely to be diagnosed with Parkinson’s, 2.7 times more likely to have an ischemic stroke, and 4.8 times more likely to be diagnosed with intracerebral hemorrhage.

The people who passed Covid-19face an increased risk of occurrence neurodegenerative disorderLike Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, compared to those who have not been infected with the coronavirus, a new Danish scientific study has concluded. But the risk is not greater than the corresponding risk for those who have the flu.

The researchers, led by Dr. Pardis Zarifkar of the Department of Neurology at Copenhagen’s Rigshospitalet Hospital, who made the announcement at the 8th Congress of the European Academy of Neurology in Vienna, analyzed data from nearly 920,000 people. .

It was found that the latter, after Covid-19, had 3.5 times more likely to be diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, 2.6 times more likely to be diagnosed with Parkinson’s, 2.7 times more likely to be diagnosed with ischemic stroke and 4.8 times more likely to be diagnosed with intracerebral hemorrhage.

However, the increased risk for most neurological conditions was not higher in patients with Covid-19 than in those diagnosed with influenza. Only patients over the age of 80 with a coronavirus were 1.7 times more likely to have an ischemic stroke than those with a bacterial flu or pneumonia.

Also, the incidence of other neurodegenerative diseases, such as multiple sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, Guillain-Barre syndrome, or narcolepsy, did not appear to increase after Covid-19, influenza, or pneumonia.

Dr Zarifkar said: “We have found evidence of an increased risk of being diagnosed with neurodegenerative and cerebrovascular disorders in patients with Covid-19. However, with the exception of ischemic stroke, most neurological disorders do not appear to be more common after Covid-19. from influenza or bacterial pneumonia “.
