The increase in coronavirus cases in the summer will not put pressure on the NHS, noted the Minister of Health Thanos Pleuris eciting relevant assessments at a conference of the Medical Association of Heraklion on the topic “Challenges and lessons learned for Sars-CoV.

Mr. Pleuris, referring to the estimates that the increase in cases in the context of the new wave of the pandemic will not put pressure on the NHS, referred to the COVID clinics, noting that their release is being done gradually.

“Of the 600 COVID ICU beds we had, since we have less than 100 intubated patients, 200-250 have been given for other incidents” said Mr. Pleuris, adding that unfortunately the staff in the hospitals do not stop being pressured, because when they fall the covid the non-covid cases and the surgeries that were left behind are going up.

As for the possibility of one new vaccine, the Minister of Health stated that the companies are currently trying for a single-dose vaccine, for which the desire is to have the characteristics of the common flu ie to be given once a year. “Currently we are not at this stage, we hope that we will be as soon as possible” explained Mr. Pleuris.

Family doctor

The Minister of Health also spoke about the institution of the family doctor, for which he explained that the goal is to register as many doctors as possible within this and the next month, while the registration of citizens also begins.

“Our aim is to reach a level of 40% to 50% of the population within the year, so that citizens will slowly see the benefit from the autumn, which is free visits, free advice” said Mr. Pleuris adding that the most important thing is not to continue the observed phenomenon, “because the citizen does not know how to go to the outpatient clinics of hospitals, but to have a doctor who will advise and direct him. In other words, we transfer the care of the citizen, from the hospital to the doctor” pointed out the Minister of Health.

In the context of the conference, the Professor of Clinical Virology of the Medical School of the University of Crete and Director of the Clinical Virology Laboratory of PAGNI, George Sourvinos, he referred to the Omicron 4 and Omicron 5 subvariants, saying they are the ones that are prevalent, adding that testing is imperative in order to have the true picture of what is happening with the pandemic.
