Mônica Bergamo: Nursing professionals from 28 countries denounce the EU to the UN for poor distribution of vaccines

A coalition formed by professional nursing organizations from 28 countries filed a complaint with the UN against the European Union, the United Kingdom, Norway, Switzerland and Singapore for making it difficult to break patents on vaccines against Covid-19.

LACKING

From Brazil, the letter endorses the National Federation of Nurses. The signatories claim that more than 45% of the world’s population has yet to receive any dose of the immunizing agent and accuse these territories of violating human rights. The complaint was sent to the UN Special Rapporteur on Health Rights, Tlaleng Mofokeng.

“Covid-19 cases continue to increase in many parts of the world, although pharmaceutical companies and governments have failed to ensure that treatments and vaccines are distributed equitably to respond to the pandemic,” the entities say.

FRONTLINE

The coalition says that in Africa and the Western Pacific, fewer than one in ten professionals are fully vaccinated. “Covid-19 has taken the lives of at least 115,000 healthcare professionals worldwide so far,” they write. “The shortage of vaccines means that, on average, only two in five health and care professionals are fully vaccinated [no mundo].”

The submission of the complaint was articulated by Global Nurses United (GNU) and the progressive global network Progressive International (PI).

Doctors from USP’s Hospital das Clínicas honored partners who donated R$ 60 million to fight Covid during a ceremony on Tuesday (23), at the theater of the university’s Faculty of Medicine, in São Paulo. The São Paulo State Health Secretary, Jean Gorinchteyn, the hospital’s clinical director, Eloísa Bonfá, and the BTG Pactual social responsibility director, Juliana de Paula, among others, were present.
