Dubbed omicron, the new variant of the coronavirus has been causing concern around the world. The new strain has 50 mutations, more than 30 of them in the S protein – an important molecule for the effectiveness of vaccines against Covid-19.
The new variant was identified in South Africa and cases of infection caused by it have already been registered in three other continents: Asia, Europe and Oceania.
The discovery brought down markets around the world on Friday (26) and made the European Union and the United States soon close borders for flights from the African continent. Brazil also decided to bar the entry of travelers from six countries: South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Eswatini.
In this Monday’s episode (28), Café da Manhã clarifies what is already known about the new variant. Microbiologist Natalia Pasternak, a researcher at USP and president of the Instituto Questão de Ciência, analyzes the reaction to the new strain and says that measures need to be taken now.
