BioNTech is working to adapt the coronavirus vaccine to treat the Omicron mutation and expects to have a new version ready within 100 days, if needed.
In accordance with Bloomberg, the company has already started development in order to move as fast as possible. The first steps in developing a new vaccine will be carried out in parallel with the research needed to assess whether a new vaccine is needed.
BioNTech and Pfizer have been preparing for months to make a new vaccine against a mutation within 100 days, if necessary. The Omicron variant has raised concerns around the world, with countries enforcing travel bans to save time as researchers study whether vaccines provide protection against the mutation.
Similarly, Moderna has started a similar evaluation and development process in case a new vaccine is needed.
Both companies said it would be clear within weeks if a custom vaccine would be needed.
