Opinion – Julio Abramczyk: The monkeypox virus is causing a global outbreak

by

Monkeypox virus (monkeypox) is highly contagious and is already causing a global outbreak.

It received this name because it was first isolated from monkeys in 1958 at the Statens Serum Institut in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Until Wednesday (13), according to the Ministry of Health, 266 cases were confirmed in Brazil. Of this total, 196 patients were from São Paulo.

Worldwide, the number of patients with monkeypox already exceeds 9,200, according to the WHO (World Health Organization).

The majority of reported cases were identified through sexual health services and involved mainly, but not exclusively, men who have sex with men. This WHO reservation avoids the same type of misinformation that was disseminated in 1980, when, when the first patients with HIV appeared, it was said that the disease only affected men who had sex with men.

Inadequate information about HIV (not confirmed later) resulted in serious family, emotional and professional damages for part of the population at that time.

According to experts, a large part of the population is vulnerable to the monkeypox virus.

The smallpox vaccine, which was discontinued more than 40 years ago in the world as it was no longer needed (smallpox had been eradicated), should provide some protection.

According to J. Guarner, from Emory University, USA, states in Jama that the smallpox vaccine would provide up to 85% of cross-protection against monkeypox.

The treatment of affected people is symptomatic and a specific antiviral agent, tecovirimat, was approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), the Americans’ Anvisa.

The mortality rate is considered to be between 1% and 11%.
