Child can take dose against Covid with other vaccines in São Paulo

Children from 5 years of age can, from this Friday (15), take the vaccine against Covid-19 along with other immunizers from the National Vaccination Calendar. Until then, it was necessary to wait at least 15 days. The Municipal Health Department says it made the change after a recommendation from the Ministry of Health.

For Luiz Artur Vieira Caldeira, Health Surveillance coordinator in the capital, the expectation is that with this new rule there will be an expansion of vaccination coverage for other diseases, since, when the child is immunized against Covid, he will already be able to have the updated vaccination.

According to a bulletin from the Municipal Health Department this Friday, 93.6% of children aged 5 to 11 years – just over 1 million people – took the first dose of the vaccine against the new coronavirus. With the second dose, the percentage is 72.6% (786 thousand children).

In addition to the immunizations of the vaccination schedule, children from six months of age can take the flu vaccine.

This Friday, the Ministry of Health recommended immunization against Covid-19 for children aged 3 to 5 years using Coronavac. On Wednesday (13), the vaccine was approved for emergency use in this age group by Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency).

The federal folder guided states and municipalities to use the doses in stock and stated that it is negotiating the purchase of more units.

In a note, the management Ricardo Nunes (MDB) said that it is awaiting doses from the state government, which distributes vaccines to municipalities.

In the capital of São Paulo, the city hall said that there are 314 thousand children of the new age group able to be vaccinated. In the state, there are about 1.1 million children.

On Wednesday, the State Secretary of Health, Jean Gorinchteyn, said that the Butantan Institute, responsible for Coronavac in Brazil, should import the vaccine from China, as soon as the federal government places the order.

Coronavac has not been produced at Butantan since October 2021, when the institute sent 110 million doses to the Ministry of Health.

Asked about the reasons for not defining whether to manufacture Coronavac in Brazil again, Butantan said this Thursday that it is necessary to know beforehand what the demand will be.
